Planning Your Bathroom Remodel

A lot of the time, we receive calls from customers because there is something wrong with their plumbing, and they rather urgently need a fix. Sometimes, though, we receive calls for far happier reasons—for instance, a homeowner may be planning a bathroom remodel, finally getting the bathroom of his or her dreams! We love helping those homeowners ensure that their new bathroom fixtures and appliances are properly installed and that their remodeling project goes off without a hitch—at least from a plumbing standpoint!
Of course, a bathroom remodel can be a pretty big undertaking, even if you tackle it as a DIY project and even if you intentionally keep your expectations modest. A bathroom remodel can be time-consuming, expensive, messy, and more—but if you plan it properly, you can minimize surprises and ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible.
In planning your own bathroom remodeling project, here are some things you always want to think about.
  1. Consider your goals for the remodel.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? Some homeowners just want to freshen up the look of their bathroom, achieving something more modern, stylish, or clean. Others may wish to have a more spacious bathroom, a more energy efficient one, or one with more storage. Make sure you’re clear on why you’re remodeling before your project begins.
  1. Consider your budget.

A bathroom remodel can get out of hand, if you’re not too careful, so it’s good to draw a line in the sand. Set a budget for yourself. Allow yourself a little room to breathe—unexpected things are going to come up, after all—but also know the point at which you need to rein things in.
  1. Consider your timeline.

How long is it going to take your bathroom remodeling project to be completed? And while it’s being worked on, will your bathroom be out of commission? If you need to adjust your family bathroom usage—i.e., if some of you are going to have to find a new place to shower in the mornings or to brush your teeth at night—start making adjustments and arrangements now.
  1. Consider your limitation.

As a homeowner, there are certain remodeling tasks you can probably do quite well—but there may be others that are simply too technical. The last thing you want is to make your remodeling project more time-consuming or more expensive do to some less-than-perfect workmanship, so make sure you know when you need to call in the pros.
