Why Your Toilet Won’t Flush

Is there anything more frustrating—or more disgusting—than using a toilet and then finding that it just won’t flush properly? The fact is, there are many reasons why a toilet may not flush the way it is meant to. Knowing why your toilet won’t flush is the first step toward addressing the issue and getting the toilet back up and running.
Some possible reasons why the toilet isn’t flushing include:
  • There is an obstruction somewhere in the pipes. If the water in the toilet bowl won’t go down at all, it is likely because there is some kind of an obstruction—too much paper used, or some small bathroom implement that was accidentally flushed down the commode. Try plunging it; if that doesn’t work, you may need to call a professional drain cleaning specialist.

  • The drain line for the toilet may have improper ventilation. If air can’t get into the drain for a proper flush, you’ll likely need to call a plumbing professional to fix things.

  • The main drain for the home may be clogged. Again, this is a problem that will require you to call a professional plumber.

  • The siphon jet may be clogged. On many kinds of toilet, especially older models, there is a small hole at the bottom of the bowl, near where the water comes out. This is called the siphon jet , and when flushed water is sent through it, it pulls the water level in the bowl down—in other words, it is essential to the toilet flushing properly. Over time, though, this small hole can get clogged with build-up and debris. You can probably clean off the build-up; put on some rubber gloves and scrub it, or use a wire hanger to poke the gunk out.

  • There may be a problem in the toilet tank. Pull the top off and make sure everything looks alright; if the water isn’t emptying from the tank into the bowl, there may be some kind of a mechanical failing in there.

  • The toilet may be old. Don’t overlook the most obvious possibility of all: Your toilet may just be broken, either because it was old or it wasn’t that great to begin with. Toilets don’t last forever, least of all if you invest in a fairly cheap one. If your toilet has simply outlived its usefulness, then it’s time to call a professional plumber to have a new one installed.
